Grain elevator to be demolished

By JOHN SURRATT
PASCAGOULA -- Jackson County port commissioners Tuesday awarded
two contracts totaling more than $500,000 for the demolition of the
port's grain elevator.
The commissioners
awarded a $496,000 contract to M and D Construction of Moss Point to
demolish and remove the grain elevator debris from the area. A $51,245
contract was awarded to Environmental Management of Hattiesburg to
perform an environmental cleanup at the site.
Betty Ann White, port
manager of government affairs and public relations, said the contractors
are expected to receive a notice to proceed on July 30.
M and D's contract
calls for the work to be completed in 180 calendar days.
"Today's contract
awards are a major milestone for the Port of Pascagoula and the citizens
of Jackson County," said Port Director Mark McAndrews.
He said it was less
than a year ago when the port commissioners decided to remove the
elevator from the 55-acre site.
"Progress has
continued at a steady pace and we are on schedule to be able to market a
new site for the port by the end of 2002," he said.
The county paid more
than $800,000 in 1994 to buy out the lease from the Louis Dreyfus Corp.
and help pay off the remaining debt on the property.
The port has never
used the elevator, which occupies 28 acres of the property and still
holds an undetermined amount of grain that was there in 1994.
Port officials at one
point considered letting military units demolish the elevator as a
training exercise for military units, but later rejected the plan.
